Description

This position is open to both Firefighter/Paramedics and Firefighter/EMT's.  The Firefighter position preserves the lives and property of the citizens of the City of Riverside by controlling and extinguishing fires, engaging in search and rescue, and responding to medical emergencies.. The Department is an ALS non-transport EMS provider and contracts its ambulance transports.
FF/EMT Pay Range: $53,148.38-$76,646.23
FF/Medic Pay Range: $66,300-$90,112.22

Examples of Duties

Primary responsibilities include performing search and rescue; extinguishing fires with an ultra high pressure pump; responding to calls for service from a rescue pumper; responding to specialty calls such as rope, water & ice rescue, Hazmat, & extrication from vehicles; performing building inspections, truck checks, & station cleaning; and participating in public relations opportunities such as National Night Out, special events, station tours, & car seat installation.  Candidates with paramedic licenses will also perform ALS procedures and cardiac arrest protocols, administer advanced medications, intubate patients, and operate Zoll monitors.

Firefighters are provided with the best training which includes a vigorous in-house training program.  Outside training includes winter and summer fire schools and much more.  Specialized training includes technical rescues, ice rescues, swift water rescues, and boat operations.

Typical Qualifications

Must be 19 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license, and be a U.S. citizen.  A High School Diploma or GED is required.  Must have a clean criminal record and driving history.  Must be certified in Firefighter 1 & 2, and HAZMAT Operations & Awareness.  Must have an EMT license.  A Paramedic license is preferred.

Supplemental Information

The ideal candidate must have effective written and verbal communication skills and be able to deal with a wide variety of people who may be distraught.  They must be able to analyze situations and make decisions in a sometimes stressful environment. They must have basic computer skills, the ability to read a map & locate addresses, and the ability to operate equipment safely.  Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
 
 The schedule for this position is a 48 on and 96 off cycle with 212 hours in a 28 day work period.  This position will be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and some overtime.  

EMT's will be required to attend paramedic school as a condition of employment and the department will cover 100% of the cost.
