General Description and Qualifications

The Big Splash Lifeguard, under the immediate supervision of the Recreation Coordinator is responsible for assisting in daily operations, safety, and guest relations. Lifeguards provide leadership and direction to the staff and supervisors and are responsible for the park when the Big Splash Assistant Pool Manager is absent.

 
The Big Splash Lifeguard shall be chosen solely on the basis of their qualifications, and as shown by the adequacy of their successful experience.
 
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Has proven ability in oral and written communications.
  • Has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, civic leaders and the public.
  • Sufficient knowledge to carry out a full range of varied responsibilities and discharge the accountability required of the Big Splash Lifeguard.
  • Has the ability to follow direction, provide necessary services and enforced stated rules and regulations while maintaining a customer service mindset.
  • Previous life guarding experience preferred.
  • Successfully complete the lifeguard practical test.
  • Knowledge of the Big Splash Employee Manual.
  • The City of Grove City is a Drug Free Workplace. All candidates who receive an offer of employment will be required to undergo testing for commonly used drugs, including marijuana.

Essential Functions of the Position

The Big Splash Lifeguard shall have the following powers and duties under the appropriate immediate supervisor:
 
  • Demonstrates regular attendance.
  • Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to the position's essential functions
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of patrons using the facility.
  • Follows established policies and procedures.
  • Responds to emergencies and provides care.
  • Provides accurate information to patrons.
  • Completes applicable reports and forms.
  • Completes custodial duties as assigned.
  • Inspects the facility for cleanliness and cleans as necessary.
  • Follows all rules, regulations and ethical conduct as set forth by the Grove City Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Grove City
  • Obeys and promptly executes all orders of the Administrative Assistant 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions and Equipment Operated

 

The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an aquatic environment including chemicals. flammables, hazardous gases, air contaminants; exposed to wet walking surfaces, weather extremes, ascends and/or descends stairs; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; routinely required to stand, walk, stoop kneel, crouch, or crawl on even and uneven surfaces; regularly required to lift, carry, push, or pull objects 50 lbs or less.
 
Note: In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered medium work.
 

Minimum Acceptable Characteristics, Licensure and/or Certification

Knowledge of office practices and procedures; English grammar and spelling; records management; *City/department goals and objectives; *City/department policies and procedures; *workplace safety practices and procedures; *personnel rules and regulations; public relations.
 
Skill in typing; word processing; computer operation; calculator operation; use of modem office equipment; use of telephone/mobile phone.
 
Ability to carry out simple instructions; carry out instructions in basic written, oral, or picture form; interpret a variety of instructions in basic written, oral, picture, or schedule form; deal with problems involving several variables within a familiar context; read, copy, and record figures accurately; complete routine forms; prepare routine correspondence; compile and prepare reports; respond to routine inquiries from public and/or officials; communicate effectively; instruct others; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; arrange items in numerical or alphabetical order; sort items into categories according to established methods; *maintain records according to established procedures; work alone on most tasks; answer routine telephone inquiries; develop and maintain effective working relationships; demonstrate manual dexterity; travel to and gain access to work site. (*indicates developed after employment).
 
American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification provided. 
 
Current adult, child and infant CPR and first aid certifications preferred.
